Saturn Pluto Opposition

Perhaps the most significant astrological pattern of 2001 is the opposition between Saturn and Pluto that started in August and ends in May 2002. This is the longest sustained period of Saturn in hard aspect to the outer planets in over a century. For nearly four years Saturn will be grinding its way into the transpersonal planets. Because the Saturn-Pluto configuration is the last of these alignments, expect that this alignment may be much more difficult and stressful.

Pluto (Hades) ruler of the underworld and the dead. He was also called Pluto - God of Wealth, because the precious metals buried deep in earth were in his realm. The name Pluto was used by both the Greeks and the Romans. Although he was an Olympian he spent most of the time in his dark castle in the underworld. Because of his dark personality he was not especially liked by neither the gods nor the mortals, he was not however, an evil god, he was stern, inexorable, and just. Hades ruled the underworld and therefore was most often associated with death and feared by men, but he was not Death itself. Pluto, the remote lord of the underworld, is renowned for his relentless demand for sweeping change. His function is, to stress-test the most fundamental principles by which we operate. Pluto will push every area under his influence to breaking point. This process can involve a great deal of loss, as we see cherished attitudes and ideals collapse under severe pressure. Those that survive are transformed, stripped back to their most essential nature.

Pluto is the wellspring of passion and power in our lives. To say that this archetype animates the cosmic play of the universe doesn't do justice to the titanic thrust and intensity this energy unleashes. Think Big Bang. We live most of our lives waiting for the next Pluto experience: sex, birth of a child, peak and ecstatic experiences. Conversely, most of our life energies are spent avoiding Pluto experiences: death and catastrophe. Pluto rules the extremes, but since the extremes come only rarely, those that are obsessed (another Pluto trait) with the power of Pluto are inclined to dominate, control, and manipulate their day-to-day, mundane reality so as to get a diluted rush of that extreme Pluto high. Pluto discovered in 1930 is the smallest planet in the solar system (smaller than our own moon ) and is the only planet that has not been visited by a spacecraft. The only images we have of the planet are those from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Saturn is the god of agriculture in Roman mythology. In Greek mythology, Saturn is called Cronos, god of agriculture and was the king of a fertile region of land on the banks of the Tiber. Saturn is the archetype which tests, limits, inhibits, suppresses, and controls. Its psychic function is to promote growth and maturation. It strips away what we intuitively feel should be rightfully ours. In order to regain what Saturn has taken, we often have to endure monumental tests of endurance, patience, courage, and internal fortitude. Saturn is the patron saint of those experiences which we often justify by believing they build character—and they do.

Saturn is head of the department of walls, boundaries, and rules. Saturn is where you build walls to keep change out, where you may segregate yourself at times, where you' ll be most likely to "Just Say No" to just about anything. Your Saturn is the critical parent inside you, the spot where you may delay, inhibit, or stall yourself. Saturn represents conservatism and resistance to change. He digs up all the dark side of our selves and our society that we would prefer to keep hidden, and shoves them in our face. He demands obedience to his dictates and hard realism in the way we see ourselves. When this is not forthcoming he will produce situations which force that outcome. It is the second largest planet is our solar system and known for its impressive rings. The first orbiter to visit Saturn was the Pioneer 11 (1979). The orbiter Cassini is currently in route and will arrive in 2004

Saturn and Pluto are in opposition in the signs of Gemini and Sagittarius and represent the fields of transportation and communication. Pluto is the planet of reform, and Saturn the planet of law, government, and big business. Sagittarius puts focus on the "noble" areas of our lives - religion, law, education, politics. Pluto' s presence in Sagittarius over recent years has put a great deal of pressure on our dearest held social and philosophical beliefs. Pluto-Saturn works on the level of inner truth. It changes reality, it brings us to the core of matters, it is deeply serious.

Our belief systems and the power of our thinking influence the world to the greatest extent. "Positive thinking" and convincing others is a phenomenon belonging to Jupiter-Pluto, but convincing others won't work any longer with Saturn-Pluto. Saturn-Pluto will ask us you to convince ourselves. Saturn in Gemini is cracking the whip over our everyday social life and building limitations and difficulties into our communication with the world. The challenge is to focus on priorities and recognize which old structures and activities need to be transformed or eliminated to achieve your goals. The greatest fears are really about losing what you no longer need. Attention on the present makes it much easier to step out of the past.

The opposition between Saturn and Pluto is going to have far-reaching effects on our social and political lives, and is likely to result in situations of great tension and difficulty. Since the collective psyche has been under duress for such a sustained period of time, the normal Saturn constriction will feel and appear to be that much more relentless and oppressive. These influences are not simply destructive. They have a very deep and important purpose.

We are at a critical point of planetary consciousness change and we cannot move into the future while we are burdened by outworn and corrupt baggage. We as a race are generally afraid of the future, and we are compelled to build structures and to try to preserve the familiar and the known - even if it is against our best interests. Sometimes these structures must be torn down to allow us to see to the horizon, and to pick up what remains of value to carry it to the future. The influence of this powerful trigger will be felt across the world at varying levels of intensity. But at the end of it, we will be looking at a far more realistic and appropriate social framework. There will be pain, but through pain comes great growth and the emergence of true beauty.

Saturn-Pluto has a magical quality if we dare to open ourselves to this level. Outer morality will change into matters of inner conscience. The more we align with our inner conscience, the better we will benefit from this opposition in the second half of 2001 and onward.

The Jupiter-Uranus opposition of 2003 promises to be most spectacular. A liberation and elevation of the human spirit the likes of which will rarely be witnessed should occur at this time.
