Labyrinth Labyrinths have a history that reaches back in time. They have been built by various cultures around the world and appear to represent a universal pattern in human consciousness, regardless of the culture in which they were used. The Labyrinth has recently been revived as a healing and restorative tool that crosses cultural and religious boundaries. As a circular symbol, the Labyrinth is an archetypal image that represents wholeness, healing, inclusiveness, and community. Many use the labyrinth as a metaphor for a journey to the Center, to God or Great Spirit. Others use it as a pathway to a closer connection with the Earth Mother, and all her creatures. The labyrinth represents our passage through time and experience. Its many turns reflect the journey of life, which involves changes of direction, transition, some uncertainty but also discovery and achievement. It shows us that no time or effort is ever wasted; if we stay the course, every step, however many turns, or great the distant seems, it takes us closer to our goal. The turns of the labyrinth are thought to balance the two hemispheres of the brain, resulting in physical and emotional healing. Moving to the center of the labyrinth is more about the journey than the destination, about being rather than doing, integrating body and mind, psyche and spirit into one harmonious whole. Walking the Labyrinth allows us to focus our thoughts and gain clarity and insight about our personal and professional lives. The Labyrinth has the ability to quiet the mind, soothe the soul, and mend the heart. The Labyrinth can also provide the opportunity to re-vision goals, assess talents and abilities, make decisions, and evaluate progress. For those of you who are not able to walk a labyrinth you can draw one on a piece of paper. Use it for a meditation with candles, music and incense. Focus on a need, an answer, use for clarity, direction, or resolution. Slowly re-trace the path with your index finger. Continue to re-trace the pattern over and over until you feel complete with the meditation. Now, expect the unexpected. Answers can come in many forms. You might suddenly recall a bit of conversation from days ago, or a memory from years ago. The answer might not come for a few days. You might recognize it as a repeated reference made by unconnected people in varying situations. But the answer will come. If you are sincere and actively listening, the answer will come. May the path of your labyrinth be one of peace, love and joy. Nameste~ | |||
