John of God - João de Deus
If after reading this you are interested in the next tour to see John of God, you can call me or email me for more information. João de Deus or John of God is the name given to the man João Teixeira de Faria by the people of Brasil. Wednesdays to Fridays, in two sessions a day, the Casa de Dom Inácio in Abadiania, Goias , Brasil is open to anyone who comes seeking healing. They come in their thousands. No-one is turned away. Consultations, most treatments and the daily soup are all free of charge. João doesn't claim to be a healer - in fact he doesn't even remember what happens. From an early age, João was given to spells of blacking out. On awakening he would be told that he had performed miraculous healings. This went on for years. João was thrown in jail, driven out of towns, condemned by religious leaders and so on; much like other documented Brazilian mediumistic healers, such as Jose Arigo whose visiting spirit identified himself as "Dr Fritz". (Read the fascinating account in Arigo: Surgeon of the Rusty Knife by John G. Fuller Devin-Adair (June 1975).) Eventually the entities that were manifesting through João told him to buy a certain piece of land and build a healing centre on it. He was then instructed to buy another piece of land. That land, it is said, proved to have an emerald mine on it. In six separate sessions a week, attended by many hundreds per session, the entities of the Casa, some manifesting one at a time through João, and many others performing their work directly, are reported by many, many people to perform extraordinary and sometimes extended acts of healing. People report powerful outcomes that can be measured (X-Rays before and after, for example) on the physical level. The lame, it is said, walk. Certainly, at the Casa there is a room full of discarded wheelchairs, walking aids and other abandoned things to do with walking. People also report profound emotional healing over time, and deep, extended, visionary spiritual experiences whilst at the Casa and even on returning home. People who had operations at the Casa report that the entities return time after time on their return to their homes in order to continue and complete the work. Most people experience a combination of an "invisible" or spiritual operation, a course or two of herbs, meditation in the current room during sessions, perhaps a session or two on the crystal light bed as their healing regime or a trip to the Sacred Waterfall. Those taking herbs, which can last for months, are forbidden alcohol, sex, and certain foods. A spiritual operation occurs every session. Those people due for an operation that session pass through the "cleansing room" and sit in the "operations room" meditating or just waiting. After a while they are asked if anyone wants a "visible" or physical operation. Volunteers (between the ages of 18 and 52) are taken back to the current room where the entity in João assesses them. Some are rejected (heavy recreational or addictive drug users for example, may not make the grade) and no more than three or four selected to have a physical operation on stage later in the session. João then enters the operations room and pronounces that everyone in the room has had their operation "in the name of Jesus". Some feel something at that point, some do not. Most however experience some reaction later that day and some people take to their beds for a bit. Some sessions, no one volunteers for a physical operation, or no one is selected. So relatively few experience "visible" or physical operations, which seem to come in three basic forms:
I had the great fortune to be close to the stage to witness an. insertion and an eye scraping. The people never flinched or appeared to be in any pain at all. It certainly breaks down ones sense of what is real and shakes up ones belief system. All these operations take place on stage in front of the people waiting to see João. Most operations, take place with the patient standing. After the operation the patient is carried in a chair to the recovery room for rest. After an hour or two they go back to their poussadas (Inn) and rest. A week later they come back to have their stitches removed. Meanwhile having meditated in the current room (a place where people sit in a meditative state with eyes closed, hold the space for the entities to do their work). Many people experience a spontaneous healing in this room. Even though the Casa has been operating in Abadiania for over 40 years, there is still pressure, covert and overt, from those in authority who find all this a bit threatening. Yet, for all that no one has proven or even claimed harm from these extraordinary operations. On the contrary. People seem to report improvements in medical conditions and in their lives generally. The Casa is supported by volunteers with few paid staff. Seeing João (or, more properly, the entity) is free. A nominal amount is charged for prescribed herbs or for sessions on the crystal light bed. There is a souvenir shop and a kiosk. All else, including the daily bowl of soup, blessed by the entity.
