Stonehenge

This ancient monument of huge stones solitarily standing on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England has captured imaginations for centuries. Theories about who built it have included the Druids, Greeks, Phoenicians, and Atlanteans. Speculation on the reason it was built range from human sacrifice to astronomy.

Investigations over the last 100 years have revealed that Stonehenge was built in several stages from 2800 - 1800 BC. It seems to have been designed to allow for observation of astronomical phenomena - summer and winter solstices, eclipses, and more.

You can imagine my delight when I discovered that we have our very own Stonehenge here is Washington at the Columbia River Gorge near Biggs. Built by Sam Hill a Quaker pacifist and a legendary road-builder as a tribute to the soldiers of Klickitat County who lost their lives. Stonehenge is the first monument in our nation to honor the dead of World War I. World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam.

The structure is a full-scale replica of England's famous neolithic Stonehenge. The monument was dedicated in 1918 but it wasn't finished until twelve years later. Sam Hill died in 1931, living just long enough to see his Stonehenge completed.

I highly recommend a trip to experience this wonderful site.

The Good Samaritan

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked (on the Jericho Road) was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But...the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?'
